Weather forces several changes to local, area basketball schedules

November 22, 2013

The winter weather that blew in late Thursday and early Friday caused several changes to area basketball schedules.
Sweetwater's JV and varsity boys and varsity girls have cancelled tonight's games at Stanton, although both boys teams have rescheduled their games for Monday. Details will be in Sunday's sports section. Sweetwater boys coach Al Hunt also said that the JV and varsity boys home games with Wall that were scheduled Tuesday are cancelled. The freshman boys will play their game Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the main high school gym, however.

Cowboys lasso Blackwell with dominating win

November 22, 2013

RANKIN — After winning the coin flip, Blackwell elected to receive the ball to start Thursday’s Six-Man Division II regional playoff against Grandfalls-Royalty.
Only one problem. The Hornets failed to recover the onside kickoff and the Cowboys scored to go ahead 6-0. And it got worse.
Grandfalls-Royalty — ranked No. 2 in Six-Man Division II — tried and recovered two more onside kickoffs, and scored after both of them, to take a 21-0 lead before the Hornets finally got possession.

Highland girls reach semis at Key City event

November 22, 2013

ABILENE — They may play in the state’s smallest classification, but on Thurs-day the Highland girls bas-ketball team — ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II — proved that it could more than hold its own against much bigger schools at the Polk-Key City Classic.
Highland ran its record to 7-0 by beating Class 4A El Paso Irvin 42-21 and Class 5A Odessa Permian 55-51 on the first day of the tour-nament, which ends Satur-day. In doing so, the Lady Hornets reached today’s championship semifinals.

Sundown beats Windthorst

November 22, 2013

Sundown scored all the points it would need with touchdowns on its first two possessions Thursday, and used it as a springboard to a 28-7 win over Windthorst in the teams’ Region I-A area playoff at Sweetwater’s Mustang Bowl.

Hornets, Cowboys set to collide today

November 21, 2013

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that a change has forced Blackwell’s football team to make some last-minute adjustments. It’s been happening all year.
On Wednesday, it was announced that the Hor-nets’ playoff game against Grandfalls-Royalty would be played today in Rankin — 24 hours earlier than scheduled — due to icy weather forecasts for Friday.
Blackwell (10-1) had to cancel three of its 10 regular-season games, managing to reschedule only one, so the shuffle is nothing new. And head coach Clint Lowry says his team looks forward to continuing its best playoff run in 17 years.

Playoffs at Bowl will start today

November 21, 2013

Mustang Bowl is hosting a pair of playoff games this week, starting today with a Class 1A, Division I area matchup between Wind-thorst and Sundown that will kick off at 6:30 p.m.
The second playoff game is a Class 2A, Division I area game between Denver City and Bangs at 7:30 p.m. Fri-day.
Bangs (8-3) is coming to Mustang Bowl for the sec-ond straight year. In 2012, the Dragons played here in the area round against Idalou and won, 23-6, to advance to regionals before losing to Eastland.
