Tigers run past Sweetwater

October 14, 2013

SNYDER — In sports, as in life, you have to take advantage of opportunities for success whenever they come your way.
In Friday’s District 4-3A opener, Sweetwater reached Snyder’s red zone on its first two possessions of the game — and came away with nothing to show for it in a scoreless first quarter.
The Mustangs also forced Snyder to punt on its first series, but the Tigers took the lead with a 16-play, 93-yard scoring drive that began at the end of the first period and resulted in a 1-yard touchdown run by D’Vincent Allison.

JV gets win over Snyder

October 14, 2013

Max Gomez threw for four touchdowns and ran for another, and the Sweetwater JV foot-ball team improved to 4-1 overall by defeating Snyder’s JV, 36-14, in the teams’ district opener here Thursday.

Highland hands Blackwell its 1st loss of the year

October 14, 2013

BLACKWELL — The hottest six-man football team in Nolan County has changed its address. Highland now has that distinction after defeating Blackwell, 76-60, on Friday in Blackwell for its fourth consecutive win.
Highland running back Michael Hyde ran for 331 yards and six touchdowns as his team improved to 4-3 this season. Blackwell, after starting out 6-0, suffered its first defeat despite 155 yards rushing and four TDs by Jayden Jones and 177 yards passing and three TDs by Matthew Lowry.

Lady ‘Stangs down Snyder in four games

SNYDER — It wasn’t easy. It never is at Snyder.
But after allowing the host team to tie the match with a decisive Game 2 win, Sweetwater rallied to win Friday’s District 4-3A volleyball match in four games by scores of 25-18, 14-25, 25-22, 25-22.
With the victory, Sweet-water (2-3, 11-18) broke out of a fourth-place district tie with the Lady Tigers, who fell to 1-4, 10-16.
“I didn’t think we played all that great, but it’s always hard over there,” Sweetwa-ter coach Liz Miller said. “It was a big game for both teams. I’m glad we were able to come out on top.”

SW teams face key matchups today

October 11, 2013

One of the biggest high school rivalries in West Texas — Sweetwater vs. Snyder — takes place today in Snyder on two fronts.
While the Sweetwater-Snyder football matchup at 7:30 p.m. is sure to get more attention, in part because it is the District 4-3A opener for both teams, the volleyball match involving the two schools — which tips off at 5 p.m. — is just as critical.
In both cases, the winner will get an early leg up on one of the four playoff spots in the district — up from three in the past — while the loser will have to work a bit harder in order to get into the postseason.
