Four Sweetwater LL teams advance on 1st day

Sweetwater batted .500 on Saturday’s opening day of District 5 Little League tournament play, as four of its eight teams in action won their games to advance to today’s second round.
Sweetwater had two win-ning teams in Major League (ages 11-12) and one each in Minor League (ages 9-10) and Junior League (ages 13-14). Eliminated were two teams in Minor League and one each in the Major League and Junior League.

Sports camps

A Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp will be held June 2-5 at the Sweetwater Middle School gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8. The camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35 which includes a T-shirt. A concession stand will be available. The camp’s goal is to improve players’ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.

Aiken chosen for THSBCA game

Sweetwater’s Greg Aiken has been chosen by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association to play in an upcoming all-star game this summer.

Sweetwater’s Abby Garcia has been named to the all-District 4-3A second team in softball as an outfielder. She is a sophomore. Also, junior Cierra Knox and sophomore Naomi Gonzales both received all-district honora-ble mention.

Mr. Mustang is chosen at SHS

Five senior boys athletes from Sweetwater High School were nominees for the title of “Mr. Mustang.” Pictured (from left) are Marquees Jenkins, Stephen May, Kaleb Hoover, Dylan Bennett and Andrew Davis.
Hoover (center) won the honor. He was an all-district performer in three sports — baseball, basketball and football — this past year.

Blackwell athletes receive honors at year-end banquet

Several Blackwell High School athletes were given top awards at a year-end sports banquet that was held May 22.
Jayden Jones and Matthew Lowry were the co-recipients for outstanding boys athlete at Blackwell this past school year and Brooklyn Harris was outstanding girls athlete.
Mason Magness was the top male scholar athlete and also received the boys Fighting Hornet award. Receiving the girls Fighting Hornet award was Shianne Solis, while Halee Sanderson was the top female scholar athlete.
