WICHITA FALLS — The best way to describe Sweet-water’s opening scrimmage against Wichita Falls Hir-schi on Friday might be to use the title of a Clint Eastwood movie.
There was the good, the bad, and the ugly.
The good: a productive passing game led by number one quarterback Kaegan Jeffrey, who completed 13 of 18 passes for 194 yards and Sweetwater’s only score, a 1-yard toss to Kaleb Hoov-er. Hoover (4 for 64), Bray Amos (3 for 68) and Isaiah McGee (4 for 47) were Jef-frey’s favorite targets.
In all, the Mustangs threw on 27 of 40 plays, while gaining all but 17 of their yards through the air.
The bad: Three fumbles, two lost, including one at Hirschi’s 1-yard line, four turnovers, and costly penalties and sacks. Also, Hirschi threw four touch-down passes on the defense, though one was disallowed because its quarterback was past the line of scrimmage. But Hayden Reeves’ interception was a highlight.
The ugly: Things got pret-ty heated between the teams Friday as emotions boiled over during the scrimmage. Several personal foul penal-ties were called.
But in the end, it was still just a scrimmage. Nothing counts until Aug. 30, when Sweetwater goes to Eastland for its season opener.
Between now and then, the Mustangs have a final scrimmage Thursday at the Bowl against San Angelo Lake View to do some more fine tuning.
Sweetwater head coach Shane Mobley said his team needs more leadership on the field. “I wanted to see how we would react when things went down, how we would get back up,” he said. “They (the players) all need to speak up. That’s very important. It’s crucial.”
