‘Stangs can clinch berth at Monahans

April 16, 2013

Sweetwater High School’s baseball team last made the playoffs in 2004. With a win tonight at Monahans — or a Snyder loss to district co-leader Wylie — the Mus-tangs will clinch a berth.
Sweetwater (6-1 district, 14-11 overall) is currently tied with Wylie for the district lead with three games left. The Mustangs have won their last three contests heading into today’s game at Monahans (1-6) since losing to Wylie on March 28, and also won its first game with Monahans 11-1 on March 26 in Sweetwater. Wylie and Sweetwater are two games ahead of Big Spring (4-3), with Snyder sitting at 3-4.
Sweetwater hosts Wylie on Saturday in a game that may decide the 4-3A champion, then ends the season by hosting Snyder April 26.
Meanwhile, Sweetwater’s softball team, which also plays at Monahans today, is in the Class 3A playoffs for the second straight year.
Sweetwater is 6-2 in District 4-3A, a game behind first-place Snyder, after defeating Big Spring 6-5 last Friday. The victory, combined with Wylie’s 11-0 win over Greenwood, assured Sweetwater a berth. Sweetwater hosts Wylie on Saturday to end the season.
