‘Stangs host ‘Cats after splitting four contests at L-View

After today, the Sweetwa-ter baseball team finally says goodbye to San Angelo.Following a season-opening tie at Class 4A San Angelo Lake View and a split of its four games at Lake View’s tournament this past week, the Mustangs will host the Class 5A San Angelo Central Bobcats at 7 p.m. today at Newman Park.Sweetwater’s four games at Lake View’s tournament were all against Class 2A opponents as the Mustangs and Chiefs did not play each other in the three-day, round-robin event. Coach Roland Herrera’s team showed resiliency on each of the last two days by coming back to get an easy win following a tough defeat.Sweetwater lost 4-3 to Wall last Thursday in its opener, but then won two of its last three games, both by big margins. On Friday, the Mustangs played twice and beat Ozona 11-4 in its first game before losing to Sonora 6-0 later in the day. But Sweetwater came back with a flourish Saturday as it shut out Coahoma, 14-0, in its final game and moved its season record back to the .500 mark at 2-2-1.Today’s contest is the first of five home games this week for the Mustangs, who host their annual Wood Bat Classic this Thursday through Saturday and will play twice on each of the final two days. After that, Sweetwater is at home just one more time before start-ing District 5-3A play here against Wylie on March 20.
