‘Stangs lose showdown to miss playoffs

February 12, 2014

GREENWOOD — This time, Grant Franklin didn’t do Sweetwater in by him-self. He had plenty of help, though, as Midland Green-wood defeated Sweetwater, 67-46, on Tuesday. The win gave the Rangers (4-6) the fourth and final boys playoff spot from District 4-3A.
Greenwood jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed against Sweetwater (3-7), which had tied Greenwood by beating Big Spring 60-45 this past Friday while the Rangers lost 66-40 against Monahans.
Franklin scored 18 points to lead Greenwood, well below his 35-point performance in a 62-61 win over Sweetwater back on Jan. 24 when his three free throws in the final nine seconds capped off a fourth-quarter rally by the Rangers.
On Tuesday, Greenwood never led by less than three points after its quick start, and was up 41-20 after the Rangers opened the third period with a 13-2 run en route to a decisive victory.
Greenwood (7-20 overall) will meet Fabens in the bi-district round next week.
Sweetwater, which got off to an 11-0 start this season, ends its season at 14-7. The Mustangs were led by Dylan Bennett, who scored 12 points. De’andre Gatson and Kaleb Hoover had nine points while Rhett Torres finished with eight points for Sweetwater. J.P. Poe scored four points while Marquees Jenkins and Quentin Wetsel finished with two apiece. It was the last game for five seniors — Bennett, Gatson, Jenkins, Hoover and Wetsel.
