Sweetwater sought a win at home against Andrews at noon today after playing — and losing — all four games at the Abilene ISD baseball tournament that ended on Saturday.
Sweetwater (6-9) man-aged a total of just 12 runs in Abilene. The Mustangs fell to Cooper 11-2 to begin the tournament Thursday. On Friday, Sweetwater was in great shape in its first game with Abilene High as it steadily built a 6-1 advantage until the Eagles tied it with a five-run sixth. Sean Morrow — who was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI — then gave the Mustangs a 7-6 lead in the top of the seventh inning when he singled, moved to third following an error and intentional walk and stole home with two outs on a close play at the plate.
But the lead disappeared after an RBI double by Abi-lene’s Conner Nichols in the Eagles’ half of the seventh, followed by Nate Kittley’s bloop single that scored Nichols with the game-win-ner. Morrow also had RBI hits in the first and fifth and Cole Maxwell and Stephen May also had RBI hits.
Sweetwater had just three hits in its second game on Friday as the Mustangs lost to Wichita Falls 2-1, and struggled again offensively in Saturday’s finale in losing to Wichita Falls Rider 11-2.
Despite entering today’s game with a six-game losing streak, Sweetwater has been very competitive for the most part as four of the defeats have been by a total of just six runs.
Sweetwater was trying to avenge one of those losses in today’s game. The Mus-tangs lost 5-4 at Andrews this past Tuesday.
JV softball team still undefeated
The Sweetwater junior varsity softball team defeat-ed Ranger’s JV, 17-6, this past Saturday to go 6-0 for the season.
Cierra Knox had three singles and four RBI and Jaya Atkins, Shaneese Brown, Gabby Fuentes and Marissa Moncada all had two hits. Isabel Mendez, Alyssa Vil-lanueva, Naomi Gonzales and Lena Lovelady also had hits. Atkins, Fuentes, Villaneuva, Mendez and Gonzales had two RBI and Moncada one. Fuentes was the winning pitcher.
