ABILENE — Despite a 82-39 loss Tuesday at Wylie and a 2-6 district record, Sweetwater’s boys basketball team can still make the playoffs.
But they probably can’t afford another loss in either of their last two games.
Sweetwater stayed within striking distance of Wylie — the No. 5 team in Class 3A — for most of the first half but was overwhelmed over the final two periods.
Wylie, 23-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in district play, was up 7-0 before the Mus-tangs scored.
But Sweetwater kept it respectable, trailing by just eight (25-17) early in the second period. Wylie led by 13, 36-23, at halftime.
But the Bulldogs quickly made it a rout after that.
Sweetwater didn’t score until 3:47 remained in the third quarter, and by then it was 53-25, Wylie as the Bulldogs cruised home.
Sweetwater (13-6 overall) did have two players in double figures, as Rhett Torres scored 16 points and Kaleb Hoover 10. Michael Hunt had six, De’andre Gatson three and Dylan Bennett and J.P. Poe two apiece.
Sweetwater plays a crucial district game here Friday vs. Big Spring in its home finale, then visits Greenwood to end its season on Tuesday.
