The Sweetwater baseball team’s win streak has gone to the next level.
It reached double digits after a 9-5 win here Thurs-day over Lubbock Estacado for the Mustangs (13-3), who have now won 10 in a row since a 3-3 start.
Sweetwater’s 13 wins are already the second most in a season under sixth-year head coach Roland Herrera, and just six fewer than last year’s squad that advanced to the Region I-3A quarterfinals after finally ending a nine-year playoff drought.
Hayden Reeves, helped by a 12-hit attack, got the pitching win for Sweetwater against Estacado on Thurs-day. Reeves had a shutout until the seventh inning and finished with 10 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings before he was lifted for Scott Warner, who was able to preserve the win after Estacado scored all five of its runs.
Reeves had been staked to a 5-0 lead before Estacado was even able to touch the junior hurler for a hit, which came on a leadoff double in the fourth inning. Reeves responded by fanning the next three batters, then got more help as Sweetwater scored twice in the fourth and sixth innings for a 9-0 lead entering the seventh.
Despite getting just three hits, the Matadors had the tying run at the plate until Warner induced a forceout on a groundball to short-stop Dylan Bennett to fin-ally end the game.
Sweetwater didn’t waste much time getting on the board as a pair of singles, a walk and James Clift’s two-RBI single put them up 2-0 in the first. Clift then scored to make it 3-0 on a double by Kaleb Hoover, and RBI singles by Hoover and J.P. Poe hiked the lead to 5-0 in the third inning. Clift drew a bases-loaded walk and Reeves had an RBI groundball in the fourth inning, and RBI hits by Greg Aiken and Hoover gave Sweetwater a 9-0 lead in the sixth.
Hoover had three hits to pace Sweetwater, which will go to Greenwood to start district play on Tuesday.
