Sweetwater’s 11-12 year-old Little League all-stars faced elimination Saturday after splitting their first two games at a Texas West Sec-tion 2 tournament held in Carrollton.
After an easy 10-0 shutout win over Burkburnett when it began play in the tournament on Thursday, Sweetwater faced Fort Worth University on Friday and lost 11-6. So instead of playing for the championship, Sweetwater fell to the losers’ semifinals against Waco Midway on Saturday and needed a win to face Fort Worth University again in the tournament title game today. Sweetwater needed to win on Saturday as well as in today’s first game in order to force a second title game later today, due to the double-elimination format. The Texas West Section 2 tournament winner advances to the Texas West state tournament in Fort Worth that is scheduled to begin a five-day run this Thursday.
In last Thursday’s win over Burkburnett, Sweet-water dominated from start to finish en route to prevailing by the 10-run mercy rule after five innings at R.J. McInnish Park.
Sweetwater opened with four runs in the first, then added three runs in the second for a 7-0 lead and another three in the fifth.
Kiante McCoy and Kobe Clark paced Sweetwater’s attack with three hits while Jordan McGee and Mason Maxwell had two hits and Ky Hoover, Chris Thompson, Taylor Turney, Noah Martinez and Andrew Melendez one. McGee had a homer, double and two RBI while Maxwell also had a homer and three RBIs and Clark had two doubles. Thompson, Maxwell and Tristan Longoria threw a combined no-hitter.
