150 acres burned

May 5, 2012

An estimated 150 acres of land burned just off of Interstate 20 on Friday afternoon. The blaze began when an 18-wheeler overheated a wheel bearing, causing it to lose a front wheel and start a fire in the median, which spread to the field north of the interstate, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. Many entities assisted in extinguishing the blaze with it spreading due to 99 degree weather with 12 percent humidity and 19 mile per hour winds. Those assisting included four trucks from the Sweetwater Fire Department, two trucks from the Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department, one truck from the Merkel Volunteer Fire Department, one truck from the Nolan Volunteer Fire Department, two trucks from the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department, two trucks from the Maryneal Volunteer Fire Department, one truck from Nolan County and TxDOT brought maintainers and water trucks. Shown above is the fire along I-20.
