Last year's award winner was Bennett and Associates; David Bennett was on hand to make the presentation of the 2011 Business of the Year to Wind Energy Turbine Services, or WETS.
The company opened its doors in February 2007 under the ownership of Mark Meneses, Larry Martin, Jason Hefner and James McCasland. Since that time, the industry has made nation-wide strides in assisting and contracting with companies for their wind farms.
Said Mr. Bennett about WETS: "From New York to California, and from Iowa to Texas, WETS has assisted in maintenances, troubleshooting, and major component replacements for many manufacturers such as Clipper, G.E. and Mitsubishi."
A majority of the employees of WETS have come from the Sweetwater work force, with several Sweetwater natives coming back to town to join the company. WETS employees are recognized by their customers not only for work safety but also for their outstanding job performance in the wind industry.
The business, along with their individual employees, understand and pride themselves in supporting local initiatives within Sweetwater. Since its inception, WETS has supported a wide variety of organizations.
They include: American Heart Association, D.A.R.E., Highland Booster Club, Nolan County Livestock Association, Nolan County United Way, Nolan County Muscular Dystrophy Association, Nolan Volunteer Fire Department, Rattlesnake Speedway, Rolling Plains Girls Softball Association (League Sponsor and All-Stars), Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, Sweetwater Fire Fighters, Sweetwater High School Cheerleaders, Sweetwater Jaycees (Scholarship Pageant, Ranch Rodeo, etc.), Sweetwater Little League (League Sponsor and All-Stars), Sweetwater Mustangs, Sweetwater Police Department, Sweetwater 5K Heart Walk/Run and the West Texas Barrel Racing Association.
Furthermore, WETS believes in a two-fold process in community activity. Not only does involvement enhance the town, but it sets an example for other companies and groups can follow in order to make Sweetwater a thriving business and social community. Two of the owners, Mr. Meneses and Mr. Martin, participate in a variety of organizations and activities.
Mr. Meneses is a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary/Holy Family Catholic Church and is personally involved with the Nolan County United Way. He is a Sweetwater School Board Trustee and a coach for Sweetwater Little League and Rolling Plains Girls Softball. He participates as a Sweetwater Mustang Booster, in Sweetwater Tennis and a Sweetwater Jaycee.
Mr. Martin is a member of the Roscoe Church of Christ. He is involved with the Sweetwater Jaycees and is a Sweetwater Band Booster. He participates in youth sports, the Nolan County Livestock Association and the West Texas Workforce Committee.
