7-run inning defeats Lady Mustangs

April 14, 2014

BIG SPRING — Despite out-hitting Big Spring 7-5 on Friday, Sweetwater fell to the Lady Steers, 7-1 — all of the runs scoring with two outs in the fourth inning.
Sweetwater scored its run in the fifth inning on two-out singles by Abby Garcia and Megan Holsey, but was unable to do more damage on the scoreboard. Garcia stole second before Holsey’s hit, then beat the throw to the plate to make it 7-1.
Pitcher Maddie Berry had a no-hitter until the fourth and retired the first two Big Spring hitters before running into all kinds of trouble. Annaliese Epinoza threw the last two innings and was impressive, retiring six of the seven batters she faced.
Holsey had two hits and Naomi Gonzales, Garcia, Savanna Hall, Morgan Gom-ez and Rebecca Gonzales one for Sweetwater (0-8 district, 9-14 overall), which will hosts Monahans (2-6, 13-11) on Tuesday.
