Abilene South wins Jr League championship

Sweetwater’s run at the District 5 Junior League (ages 13-14) title came to an end on Thursday as Abilene South won 12-2 in the championship game at Abilene Wylie’s field.

ABILENE — After win-ning a tiebreaker to make it to the semifinal round as a wild card entry and then defeating Abilene North 6-5 on Tuesday, Sweetwater’s run at the District 5 Junior League (ages 13-14) title came to an end on Thursday as Abilene South won 12-2 in the championship game at Abilene Wylie’s field.
Sweetwater was able to stay within striking dist-ance in the first half of the contest, trailing only 5-2 after three innings, but Abilene South put the game out of reach by scoring seven more runs over the next three frames while shutting out Sweetwater to win by the 10-run rule. Sweetwater’s only runs came when Corey Mendez reached on an error and scored on Hardy Escobar’s sacrifice in the second inning, and when Rocky Perez reached on an error and scored on Joe Ruiz’s RBI single in the third inning. Scott Warner and Max Gomez pitched for Sweetwater.
