ALBANY — A huge under-dog to Albany, Roscoe got on the board first in Friday’s District 7-1A, Division II matchup on a 3-yard touch-down run by Vincent Pan-toja to take a 6-0 lead with 9:08 left in the first period.
But after that, it was all Albany as the Lions — who were led by the outstanding play of their quarterback Jake Bumgardner — roared to a decisive 69-12 win.
Albany (5-1 overall and 3-0 in district) had 41 points in the second quarter to open a big 48-6 halftime lead, and added another score until the Plowboys fi-nally ended the run when Cutter Davila completed a 12-yard pass to Jesus Lean-os with exactly five minutes left in the third quarter.
Though he wasn’t a one-man wrecking crew for the Lions, Bumgardner was at least partly responsible for most of their 69 points as he rushed for two touchdowns, threw for two, returned a punt for another score and converted 9 of his 10 extra point kicks against Roscoe.
Roscoe (1-5, 1-2) did most of its damage through the air, managing just a nega-tive-10 yards rushing. Davi-la completed 21 of 36 pas-ses for 204 yards, although much of his total came after Albany had built a substan-tial lead. Davila connected with six receivers, led by Esteban Benivamondez’s seven catches for 103 yards including a 41-yarder. Lan-don Jones (3 catches, 32 yards), Eduardo Gallegos (4, 20), Jesus Leanos (2, 20), Chris Deleon (2, 15) and Shelton Toliver (3, 14) also caught passes.
Roscoe should fare a lot better this week when it hosts Ranger (0-3, 0-6) at Plowboy Field.
The Bulldogs haven’t won a game since 2010 and lost to Gorman, 52-6, on Friday. The Plowboys will then go to Gorman (1-2, 2-4) and Hamlin (3-0, 4-2) the next two weeks before finishing at home against Roby.
