After a disappointing day that saw all three local teams in action lose on Monday, Sweetwater’s Junior League (ages 13-14) all-stars are suddenly the only survivor in District 5 Little League tournament baseball action in Abilene.
But even they aren’t very happy after losing 6-5 to Abilene South on Monday in the teams’ winners bracket semifinal. South advanced to the title game Thursday by overcoming a 5-3 deficit with three runs in the seventh inning. The loss means Sweetwater is now down to its last chance, and must beat Wylie or Abilene North in its losers bracket final at Wylie at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Monday was also a tough day for two other teams who ran out of chances.
In bracket play, Sweetwa-ter’s 11-12 year-old all-stars lost 12-2 against Wylie to finish with a 3-2 record. The team had shut out Merkel (11-0) and Clyde (10-0) in dominating fashion in its two games before losing to Wylie on Monday in its bid to reach the title game.
In pool play, Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars fin-ished 1-3 after losing, 10-8, to Clyde. Wylie (4-0) was declared district champion.
Sweetwater’s 9-10 year-olds were eliminated Sun-day by Breckenridge after they were beaten 9-3, fin-ishing with a 1-2 record.
