All-star teams begin play at district tourneys

June 26, 2013

Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-olds won their game in dra-matic fashion, but the other three local all-star teams all fell short in District 5 Little League All-Star tournament action on Tuesday.
Snyder led the 10-11 year-olds 1-0 entering the sixth inning, but Sweetwater won it 3-1 on a 3-run, walk-off homer by Rylen Moncada in their first of four District 5 pool play games. Sweetwa-ter plays again Thursday vs. Wylie at 8 p.m. at Wylie.
But Sweetwater’s 9-10, 11-12 (Little League) and 13-14 (Junior League) all-star teams all went down to defeat Tuesday in their pool play games.
Sweetwater lost to Abil-ene Southern 14-6 in 9-10 year-old action, while the 11-12 year-olds lost to Wylie 18-0 and the Junior Leag-uers were beaten by Snyder 20-7. It was the second pool loss for the Junior Leaguers, who also were defeated by Wylie 30-7 on Monday.
The 9-10 year-olds will play Abilene Dixie in their final pool game at 6 p.m. today in Tuscola, and the 11-12 years-olds’ final pool game is at 8 p.m. today at Wylie’s Little League field vs. Abilene Southern.
Three age groups — 9-10, 11-12 and Junior League — will begin bracket play Thursday, with seeds based on records and pool rank. 10-11 year-old teams with one or fewer pool losses start bracket play next week.
