Last Saturday Sweetwater High School Band member Crysten Ivy gave the performance of a lifetime, performing with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio. The concert was witnessed by an enthusiastic audience of several thousand music educators, family members and supporters. It was the culmination of the annual Texas Music Educators Convention, which involves more than 10,000 elementary music teachers and band, choir and orchestra directors. The three-day event includes clinics and masterclasses by state, national and world leaders in music education, along with concerts by premier collegiate and professional ensembles. This convention included concerts by the Texas Tech Choir, the UNT Symphony Orchestra, the Baylor Concert Band and many others.
Crysten's all-state band conductor was the Colonel Tim Foley, retired director of "The President's Own U.S. Marine Band" from Washington D.C. Colonel Foley worked with the all-state band for two days, and then led Texas' best young musicians in a concert of challenging and rewarding music.
Crysten is a sophomore clarinetist in the Sweetwater High School Band. Sweetwater is currently preparing for UIL Solo Contest, which will be held at Abilene High School on Saturday, Feb. 18. Upcoming events include a spring trip, and the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest.
