One night after getting a dramatic win over Colorado City on a buzzer-beater by Taylor Jones, the 5-9 senior poured in a season-high 21 points while Sweetwater got off to a good start here Tuesday against Andrews.
However, Jones didn’t get a lot of scoring help as no other Mustang player was able to reach double figures, and the visiting Mustangs came away with a 59-41 win. The game was basically decided in the third quarter, when Andrews outscored Sweetwater 19-8 after leading just 27-22 at halftime.
Cole Maxwell hit a pair of three-pointers, and Anthony Palacios and Tino Martinez connected on twos as Sweetwater used a 10-4 run to get within 54-41 with a little over two minutes to play in the contest. That was as close as Sweetwater got, however, as the Mus-tangs fell to 2-2 in their last game before the break.
Behind Jones, Sweetwa-ter rallied from an early 9-4 deficit to tie the game 13-13 after one quarter and stay with Andrews for one half.
Jones hit a pair of 3s early in the third quarter, but Andrews began to pull away, using a decisive 12-2 run to close out the period with a commanding 46-30 lead. Sweetwater committed 29 turnovers, most of them coming in the second half against a full-court press, and couldn’t recover.
Kaleb Hoover finished with eight points for the Mustangs. Maxwell had six and Martinez, Dylon Adames and Palacios all finished with two points.
The JV boys are now 4-0, beating Andrews 39-29 as Trae Taylor (12) and Dylan Bennett (10) led the way.
Andrews led 9-5 after the opening quarter, but the Mustangs came back to win the next two periods 25-12 and open up a 30-21 lead that was too much for the visitors to overcome.
Also scoring for the Mustangs were Deandre Gatson with six points, Quentin Wetsel with five, Marquees Jenkins with four and Mike McCoy with two.
Duanta Williams scored 28 points, meanwhile, for the Sweetwater freshman boys as they beat Andrews 36-28 to improve to 2-0. Also scoring for the Ponies were Rhett Torres and Martes Harris, who both had four. All three teams will host Wall in Sweetwa-ter’s next games Nov. 29.
