Nolan County’s three area football teams will all face tough non-district road games today.
1A Roscoe (0-3) is at Class 2A Merkel (1-1), while the county’s two six-man teams, Highland and Blackwell, will also be traveling tonight to play Fort Davis and Robert Lee, respectively. Highland’s game is at Garden City.
Blackwell is also 0-3 so far, while Highland (1-2) is coming off its first victory, 70-52 against Novice.
Sweetwater (2-1) rounds out tonight’s local schedule as the Mustangs go for their third win this season when they host Early.
Roscoe has just two more non-district games on its schedule before the Plowboys kick off District 7-1A action against Hamlin on Oct. 7. The Plowboys are having a rebuilding year, but they also arguably may have the toughest non-district schedule of any Class 1A team in West Texas.
Merkel will be the first team that Roscoe has faced with a loss on its record as the Plowboys’ first three foes — Albany, Hawley and Stamford — are all 3-0.
Things aren’t likely to be any easier for Blackwell or Highland. Robert Lee and Fort Davis are a collective 4-1 and are both ranked in the top half of the state’s 65 Division I six-man teams.
But Highland at least has a victory under its belt after beating Novice, giving the Hornets their first victory under coach Jeff Shelton.
At Blackwell, the Hornets are coming off a 44-20 homecoming loss to Lueders-Avoca last Saturday.
