Artfully Abilene's CALF to begin tomorrow
On June 14-17, 2012, Abilene will host Artfully Abilene's "Children's Art & Literacy Festival" (CALF) featuring Dr. Seuss. This idea emanated from the The National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature (NCCIL) planned exhibition of the original illustrations from "The Lorax" on June 1-Aug. 31, 2011. To enhance this Seussian experience they have also secured funding for "The Art of Dr. Seuss Retrospective," as well as the Seuss Sculpture Touring Garden. The "Retrospective" offers a rare glimpse into the artistic life of a celebrated American icon. Included are 32 historical panels featuring over 200 images and rare items, such as photographs, advertising artwork and original materials — telling the story of Geisel's art and life chronologically.Through the medium of large scale bronze sculpture, the Touring Sculpture Garden allows kids at heart from 2 to 92 to experience an in-depth look at six of the most beloved books and characters created over Theodore Seuss Geisel's 70 year career. This larger than life educational art experience explores the stories behind the Cat in the Hat, the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Green Eggs and Ham's "Sam I Am," Yertle the Turtle, Horton the Elephant and Seuss's groundbreaking environmental character, The Lorax. The CALF committee is committed to incorporating a strong literacy component into this citywide festival. Readings from seven of his most beloved books by narrators, accompanied by the costumed character, will occur three times a day at seven locations. Children will receive buttons for each book reading they attend and will be eligible to win prizes. Every effort is being made to involve children from all backgrounds."We are particularly pleased that Melissa Richardson, Autism specialist with Region 14 will be designing activities specifically for children with special needs and recruiting volunteers to oversee their involvement," said event coordinators. "We believe this may be the only children's art and literacy festival in Texas, and perhaps the Southwest that offers this dimension."Elizabeth McVey, the marketing director of the Abilene Cultural Affairs Council, stated, "We would like to inform Sweetwater residents that they can register for the CALF featuring Dr. Seuss on our website (http://www.abilenecac.org/calf/)."The first 250 people to register will receive a $10 gift card either to Famous Daves or Buffalo Wild Wings.Children’s Art and Literacy Festival (C.A.L.F): Featuring Dr. Seuss On-Going Exhibitions• The Lorax — original illustrations — National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature 102 Cedar.• Art of Dr. Seuss Retrospective — National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature and Center for Contemporary Arts 220 Cypress.• Seuss Touring Sculpture Garden — six bronze sculptures of some of his most beloved characters are exhibited throughout the downtown.• Artist Member Seuss Inspired Exhibition — Center for Contemporary Arts.• Intercollegiate Seuss Inspired Exhibition — ACU Downtown Gallery, N. 2nd.• The Abilene Zoo — Board the Seuss Train to see Animals, Birds and Reptiles.Thursday, June 14, 2012Noon to 8 p.m. — Open Registration at the T&P Depot Boardroom.5-6 p.m. Meet Sir Zebu, Bitsy and your favorite Seuss Characters.Railroad Depot Everman Park — Sponsor Preview Party.5-8 p.m. — Artwalk “The Seuss is Loose” The Center for Contemporary Arts.(Parade, costume contest, documentary film on the life of Dr. Seuss). All Exhibits will be open during Artwalk.Rally in the Alley — Music, characters, balloon man, Sir Zebu and Bitsy autograph and photo party, 5-7 p.m.Friday, June 15, 2012Noon to 8 p.m. — Open registration at the T&P Depot Boardroom.Readings will take place at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the following locations:The NCCIL — The LoraxThe Center for Contemporary Arts — The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole ChristmasThe Abilene Zoo — If I Ran the ZooCypress Street Station — Green Eggs and HamThe Abilene Public Library — Horton Hears a Who!Texas Star Trading Co. — The SneetchesThe Grace Museum — Yertle the TurtleThere will also be a kids workshop/activity at the Center for Contemporary Arts, Public Library, NCCIL and Grace Museum.Saturday, June 16, 20129 a.m. to noon — Open registration at the T&P Depot Boardroom.9-11 a.m. Green Eggs and Ham brunch at Cypress Street Station.10 a.m. Dr. Seuss movie at The Historic Paramount.Readings will take place at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the following locations:The NCCIL – The LoraxThe Center for Contemporary Arts – The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole ChristmasThe Abilene Zoo – If I Ran the ZooCypress Street Station – Green Eggs and HamThe Abilene Public Library – Horton Hears a Who!Texas Star Trading Co. – The SneetchesThe Grace Museum – Yertle the TurtleSunday, June 17, 201211 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Hop on Pop Father’s Day Picnic at Nelson Park.
