Athlete workouts begin on Monday

The unofficial start of the 2011-12 high school sports season arrives Monday, as Nolan County football and volleyball athletes report for their first workouts.
Sweetwater High School volleyball athletes are sche-duled to work out Monday from 6:30 a.m. to noon and again from 2-5 p.m. Head coach Liz Miller said that the schedule for the rest of the week would be from about 7:45 a.m. to noon and from 2-5 p.m. Between 55 and 60 athletes are expected to show up for this year’s workouts, according to Miller. The first scrimmage is Aug. 5 at San Angelo Central and season begins Aug. 9 when Sweetwater will host Seminole. The full schedule is shown above.
Sweetwater High School football athletes will have their workouts this week from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with breaks in between, according to head coach Craig Slaughter.
Slaughter said that JV and varsity players would also have workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively. The third-year head coach expects just over 100 ath-letes to report for workouts this week, with 40-43 of them expected to be on the varsity this year.
Athletes will work out in shorts until Friday, Aug. 5, when they don full pads for the first time. Also on Aug. 5, a Red-White intrasquad scrimmage will be played at 8 p.m. at Mustang Bowl. The first scrimmage against outside competition will be Friday, Aug. 12 at Lubbock Cooper, Slaughter said. The second and final scrimmage is Friday, Aug. 19, when Sweetwater plays host to San Angelo Lake View at the Bowl.
Sweetwater kicks off its 2011 season by hosting Ver-non on Friday, Aug. 26 and remains home Sept. 2 when it plays host to Monahans at the Sammy Baugh Classic.
Roscoe High School’s football athletes are sched-uled to work out on Monday from 7-9 a.m. and 10 a.m. to noon, said head coach Jonathan Haseloff. Players will start workouts about 30 minutes earlier the rest of the week, he said. Haseloff also said he is expecting at least 34 athletes to report for workouts at Roscoe’s practice field. The Plowboys play their first scrimmage on Aug. 13 at Haskell, and will kick off their season on Aug. 26 at Albany. Roscoe will “host” Hawley Sept. 1 at the Sammy Baugh Classic.
Highland High School football athletes will have workouts this week from 7-9 a.m. and 10 a.m. to noon at Highland’s practice field, according to new head coach Jeff Shelton.
Shelton expects between 18 and 20 players to report for workouts. The first scimmage is Aug. 12 against Panther Creek and the season starts Aug. 25 against Bryson at Trent.
Blackwell coach Nathan Hayes expects about 16 ath-letes to report to the school practice field when the team holds its first workouts, which will be held from 7 a.m. to noon for the next two weeks.
Blackwell will play its first scrimmage on Aug. 12 when it plays host to Jayton, while the season is scheduled to begin for the Hornets on Aug. 27 against Water Valley at the West Texas Six-Man Football Shootout held in McCamey.
