Roscoe native Katy Fullwood will be back in west Texas for the summer to organize a charity theatre event for the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. All proceeds from the performance of "Black Comedy" by Peter Shaffer will go towards the restoration of the Municipal Auditorium. "I wanted to give back to my community and incorporate theatre," said Fullwood. "The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium is an amazing landmark for Sweetwater and Nolan County. I had the privilege to perform there in 2010 for our community performance of ‘The Cover of Life.’ It is a beautiful auditorium that does not get utilized nearly enough."
Fullwood grew up in Roscoe and attended Highland ISD along with the rest of her family. After her summer break, she will start her senior year at Texas A&M University in College Station. Her parents are Scott and Lisa Fullwood of Roscoe. Fullwood has three brothers. Jake and his wife Ashlee live in Spring, Texas with their sons Jaxton, Jagger and Jetten; Zach and his wife Brittany live in Spring, Texas with their son Bear; and Cole and his wife Amanda live in Sweetwater with their sons Kamdon and Lawson.
"The Municipal Auditorium board is so happy to have Katy here in Sweetwater for this event," said Jan Smith. "We're hoping to use this event as a springboard to kick start the community theatre program in Sweetwater."
Fullwood is a senior Theatre Arts major and Communications minor from Texas A&M with a great passion for theatre. She acted in Highland's UIL One Act Play competitions throughout high school. "I decided to continue my education in theatre because it makes me truly happy," she said. "I have stemmed away from acting and focused more on the aspect of management. I have been an assistant stage manager, a stage manager and a house manager. I love my theatre department at A&M and I have learned so many useful techniques and concepts to further my career."
Fullwood also has a great passion for community service. In high school, she coordinated the Nolan County Youth Board and two proms for the residents at Nolan Nursing and Rehab. "The community theatre in Sweetwater has depleted and I want to give life back to the arts of Nolan County," Fullwood said. "Hopefully I can inspire people to continue to get involved and create!"
Auditions for the charity theatre event will be held Tuesday, May 27, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium. Anyone interested in participating is asked to prepare a one minute monologue from a modern comedy. Once the cast is selected, rehearsals will begin in early June and the performance dates are July 17-19.
