Baker places 10th at state in powerlifting

Three Sweetwater powerlifters recently competed at their respective state meets

ABILENE — Donald Baker, a senior at Sweet-water High School, lifted a total of 1,120 pounds for a 10th-place Division II finish Saturday when he competed at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association’s state meet held in Abilene.
Baker, competing in the 148-pound weight class, had a 440-pound squat, 245-pound bench press and 435-pound dead lift while making his first trip to state after a second-place regional finish.
Two Sweetwater High School girls, Ashley Lara and Alexis Thompson, competed one week earlier at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association state meet in Corpus Christi.
Lara, competing in the 198-pound weight class, placed 14th. Thompson, who competed in the 114-pound weight division, placed 19th.
