Banyard is ‘Skins’ leading rusher

August 7, 2012

Former SHS football player & current New Orleans Saints player Joseph Banyard

In his first NFL game Sunday in Canton, Ohio, ex-Sweetwater High star Joseph Banyard ran for a team-high 18 yards on five carries as New Orleans Saints beat the Arizona Cardinals 17-10 in the season-opening Hall of Fame exhibition game.
In addition to his running, the 213-pound Banyard caught one pass for negative-3 yards and also spent some time on defense, as he recorded two solo tackles.
Banyard was original-ly signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jack-sonville Jaguars before being waived a few weeks later. But Banyard, who played collegiately for the University of Texas-El Paso, got a second chance when New Orleans signed him to a three-year contract in June after an impressive performance at the team’s minicamp in early June. Banyard, who transferred to UTEP after committing to TCU, finished his two-year college career with 1,490 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns. He ran for 867 yards and six TDs in his final year.
