Banyard debuts for Vikings

August 12, 2013

Former Sweetwater High School athlete Joe Banyard saw NFL action for the first time this season Friday with the Minnesota Vikings in the team’s preseason opener with the Houston Texans.
Banyard, a 24-year-old running back, had eight yards on four carries and also caught a 4-yard pass in the game, which the Vikings lost 27-13. He is trying to make the team’s 53-player roster this year after ending last season on the Vikings’ practice squad.
Banyard was originally signed in April 2012 as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars. After being waived, he signed with the New Orleans Saints in June and played in a few exhibition games before an injury led to his release in September. He was then signed by the Vikings this past November.
