Bearcats run to 38-6 victory over Plowboys
A 38-6 season-opening loss to De Leon on Thursday at the Sammy Baugh Classic wasn’t what Roscoe was hoping for. But head coach Jonathan Haseloff still saw encouraging signs for his team, which is coming off an 0-10 season.“I’m pleased with the way our kids performed for three quarters,” he said of his Plowboys, who trailed just 18-6 at halftime. “But when we came out in the second half we just made some awful boo-boos, being young, and we’ve got to stop doing that. But I thought we did some things well and a lot of our young kids really stepped up.”Roscoe kept the game competitive for one half despite allowing De Leon to score on its third offensive play, and then score again to go up 15-0 with just under eight minutes left in the opening period. But the defense recovered a fumble at the Bearcats’ 44 near the end of the quarter to set up Roscoe’s only score on a 19-yard pass from Matthew Davila to Chris Deleon with 9:57 left in the first half. After the defense got another stop, Roscoe moved from its 8-yard line to the De Leon 31 following a 23-yard completion from Davila to Deleon, but the drive stalled out from there.Davila, a sophomore who was making his first start at quarterback, completed 15 of 27 passes for 116 yards. He found seven different receivers while running the team’s new spread offense.De Leon threw just once — it was incomplete — but rushed for 469 yards in the game and averaged close to 10 yards a carry. Three players — Auston Sadberry, Kaleb Nowlin and Derek Patterson — had 100-yard rushing games and Sadberry and Patterson scored twice. However, the biggest play of the game was produced by Nowlin, who fielded a short punt early in the third quarter and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown that increased De Leon’s lead to 25-6. That fueled a 20-point third period surge that put the game away.Nowlin and Roscoe run-ning back Eduardo Gallegos were named their respective team MVPs in a vote that was announced immediate-ly after the game. Gallegos, a senior, had several strong runs for the Plowboys and finished with 106 yards on 16 carries.Roscoe travels to Irion County next week.
