A benefit dinner and dance for Melinda Torres, who is battling leukemia, will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Sweetwater Jaycees Barn.
Melinda, born and raised in Sweetwater, is the daughter of Joe and Elizabeth Torres. She is a single parent with a son, Dylan, attending Texas Tech University.
Melinda is a Registered Nurse and began her nursing career at Abilene State School before moving on to Abilene Regional Medical Center. She is now at Baylor All Saints Medical Center in Fort Worth.
She was diagnosed with leukemia on April 10, 2014 and immediately began chemotherapy treatments. Melinda is needing a stem cell transplant. A donor drive will be held during the benefit starting at 11 a.m. Age requirements for the cheek swab are 18 to 55 years of age. The process is very simple to determine whether you are a match for Melinda, or possibly another patient in need of a transplant. A cheek swab is completed and sent to Delete Blood Cancer (DKMS) for processing. Once you are determined to be a match, the donation involves a non-surgical, outpatient procedure that collects blood stem cells through the bloodstream. A single donor can make all the difference in the world! You will be registered as a donor with the possibility of providing patients with second chances at life.
Barbecue sandwich and chicken burrito combos will be sold for $6. For pre-orders, call Thursday, July 31 to either Melissa Rendon at 325-829-2873 or Michael Torres at 325-933-0380. Tickets will also be sold for a 50/50 raffle and a barbecue grill raffle. A silent auction with many items will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Lots of great items, including Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, a handmade wooden bench and an ice chest, have been donated by local businesses and anonymous donors.
Music and dancing will start at 8 p.m. with special guests Thoze Guyz for $6 per person. All donations are also welcome.
For additional details, please call Melissa at 829-2873 or Michael at 933-0380.
