BGC’s Spirit of Christmas drives on

The Sweetwater Brookshire’s grocery store is currently participating in the Spirit of Christmas food drive. All food donated during the food drive is donated to the Sweetwater Goodfellows. Shown are Nathan Hartkopf and Aaron Dehoyos at the local Brookshire’s store. Those wishing to participate in the food drive may purchase a bag of groceries to be donated to the food drive.

Brookshire Grocery Company's 29th annual Spirit of Christmas Food Drive continues in approximately 150 supermarkets in 116 cities and towns throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.
The stores are collecting donations of non-perishable foods and teaming up with a wide variety of service organizations, food banks and volunteers to distribute food to families who need assistance.
Last year more than 500,000 pounds of food were collected and donated to more than 16,000 families in need.
“The goal is to supply about a week’s worth of groceries per household based on need,” said BGC Community Relations Director Sam Anderson. “Our company donates boxes to pack the food in, coupons for a free hen to go along with the shelf-stable goods collected, and sells scan coupons which go back to our partnering service organizations for supplemental or needed items in the drive.”
The food is distributed in the area in which it is donated. Local food donated goes to the Sweetwater Goodfellows food and toy distribution. This year's distribution will be from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, at Lamar Street Baptist Church. The annual Christmas party will follow from 3:45-4:45 p.m. on that day.
Anderson noted schools have had a major impact on the food drive and encourages those who have not to help out where possible.
“Schools or classes within schools often hold competitions and bring in thousands of cans and other non-perishable food items for our food drive,” added Anderson. “Students and faculty in many areas have been very generous throughout the years in supporting this project. We encourage schools that wish to help to contact their local store to get more information.”
BGC’s food drive started in Tyler in 1982 with the Rose City Kiwanis Club.
Ninety families received assistance that year.
