Blackwell girls win 14-A opener
The Blackwell girls tipped off District 14-A, Division II basketball play on Tuesday with a 37-22 home win over Veribest. Hailey Bennett and Brooklyn Harris each had 10 points for the Lady Hornets (3-2 overall), who led just 11-9 at halftime but used a 17-6 third-quarter surge to pull away.Stephanie Metcalf scored eight points, Halee Sander-son five and Shianne Solis and Bailey McGlothlin had two points for Blackwell, which will have a much tougher district assignment on Friday when it hosts Garden City, which is currently ranked No. 6 in Class 1A, Division II.Sub-varsity results:The freshman boys were the only sub-varsity winner for Sweetwater’s teams at Brownwood on Tuesday.The Ponies won 42-40 as they improved their season record to 4-0. Jacoby Hunt scored 11 points and Michael Green 10, while Jordan McGee had seven, Keevin Houston six and Hunter Mobley and Javier Olguin four. But the JV boys lost 60-47. Hardy Escobar had 14, Denzell Moore 12, Deshaun Williams six, Michael Lawrence four, Colby Greenwood and Jor-dan Jones three, Matthew Trevino and Mark Lawrence two and Adan Sanchez one.Both Sweetwater girls sub-varsity teams lost. The freshman girls fell 40-31 as Lauren Jones had 11 points, Kaitlyn Foster and Stephanie Castillo eight and Davina Walker four. The JV girls also lost, 23-18, in their contest. No individual point totals were reported.Girls game added :Sweetwater will be playing a varsity girls game on Friday at Roscoe at 5 p.m. that was not originally on the schedule. Sweetwater’s varsity boys will host Bangs on Friday at 8 p.m.Also, the freshman and JV boys will be seeing action on Friday as they host Bangs at 5 and 6:30 p.m., respective-ly. The varsity girls are 3-4, while the boys are off to a perfect 4-0 start.Tournament begins:Roscoe’s varsity boys are hosting a tournament that begins today with four games scheduled. Ira will play Klondike at 2 p.m., followed by Hawley vs. Trent at 3:30 p.m., San Angelo Texas Leadership Charter Academy vs. Rotan at 5 p.m. and Roscoe vs. Anson in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m. The double-elimination, three-day tournament will run through Saturday. High-land’s JV teams also host a tournament on Saturday. Signups underway:Mustang Youth Basketball signups began on Tuesday, and continue with signups on Thursday and Monday at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital’s conference room located at the front of the hospital. Signups on both days are from 5:30-7 p.m. Children in grades 3-6 are eligible to register and will need their birth certificate as well as registration fee. According to youth basket-ball officials, no late regis-trations will be allowed.
