Tough competition on the gridiron Friday made it a rather long night for all three of Nolan County’s area football teams.
Blackwell, which was coming off its first Six-Man win on the field in nearly two years with a season-opening victory over Westbrook the previous week under new head coach Clint Lowry, was defeated 56-30 by Jayton.
Highland and Roscoe, who like Blackwell are going through the rebuilding process with several young players, were shut out on Friday. Highland lost to Sterling City by a score of 50-0, while Roscoe lost 40-0 at Irion County.
Both Roscoe and High-land are 0-2 for the young season but are hoping to turn things around soon.
Blackwell played a four-quarter game against Jayton but trailed 22-8 after one period, 44-16 at halftime and 50-22 after three per-iods, though the Hornets did battle Jayton on even terms the last two quarters.
Jayton (2-0) outgained Blackwell 258-186 and the Hornets also lost three fumbles in Friday’s Six-Man contest, which was played in Blackwell. Jayden Jones scored three of Blackwell’s four TDs, two on runs of 85 and 6 yards and the other on a 30-yard reception from QB Ethan Andrews. Also, Mason Magness scored on a 4-yard run for Blackwell.

Highland, playing its second highly-ranked oppon-ent in as many games this season, was limited to 25 total yards in a little over two quarters as Sterling City won by the mercy rule and had 204 yards while also recovering three fumbles. Highland quarterbacks Ethan Wilson and Jacob Richburg completed 5 of 12 passes with Shelby Howard, Michael Hyde and Eli Shelton on the receiving end. The top rushers were Shelton, who ran for 22 yards on his only carry, and Howard, who had 21 yards on five carries. Hyde gained nine yards on seven carries and Wilson had a 4-yard run. Gaga Soedarson had 66 yards on four kickoff returns and recovered a fumble, as did Kevin Box. The leading tacklers for Highland were Hyde, who had three solo stops and five assists; Box, who had three solo stops and two assists; and Soedarsono with three solo tackles. Howard, Lara-mie Thompson and Zack Cornett had two solo stops.

Roscoe traveled to Irion County after losing to De Leon 38-6 at the Sammy Baugh Classic, but couldn’t generate much offense this time either as Irion County held the Plowboys to 116 yards, 99 of it passing. Iri-on County was ahead 34-0 by halftime. Roscoe quar-terback Matthew Davila, however, completed 15 of his 29 passes. Chris Deleon (6), Zack Longoria (4) and Eduardo Gallegos (2) had multiple catches and Brant Burnett, Kevin Lavalais and Vincent Pantoja one each. Jesus Leanos came up with a pass interception. Gallegos rushed for 16 yards on eight carries to pace Roscoe.
