BLACKWELL — District rivals Blackwell and Robert Lee began district play against each other here on Friday — then ended it just a couple of hours after their District 8, Division II Six-Man opener.
In between, Coach Clint Lowry’s Hornets beat the Steers 84-56 to claim the district championship and the No. 1 seed for the playoffs that start in two weeks.
After Blackwell (7-1) spotted Robert Lee (4-4) an early 8-0 lead, the Hornets ran off the next 22 points to go ahead for good and led by as much as 28, 44-16, well into the second quarter. But Robert Lee came roaring back with 20 straight points to get within eight, 44-36, as the teams went to their dressing rooms.
The Steers were still with-in striking distance, 62-50, midway through the third quarter until Blackwell put the game with two quick scores on a 62-yard run by Jayden Jones and a 50-yard interception return from Matthew Lowry — plus two Wade Allen kicks — for a 76-50 lead. Ted Chambliss scored Blackwell’s last TD when he caught a 7-yard pass from Lowry in the fourth quarter.
Blackwell and Robert Lee are the only schools in the four-team district who were able to field teams with enough players. But they provided an entertaining game nevertheless.
Blackwell exceeded 80 points for the second time and had 500 total yards, 411 of its rushing. Jayden Jones ran for 263 yards and six TDs. In addition, Chambliss and Mason Magness ran for TDs and Chambliss caught a TD pass from Lowry.
Both Jones (on a fumble recovery) and Lowry (interception return) had defensive scores. Lowry finished with 89 yards passing, with all three of his pass comple-tions to Chambliss. Also contributing to the rushing total was Franck Cano (73 yards on five carries), while Magness had 44 yards on three carries and Chambliss 29 yards on two totes. Lowry and Ethan Andrews each picked off two passes.
