Blackwell will face Rob. Lee for district title

October 31, 2013

Blackwell’s football team has something in common with the government. Both have been experienced a recent shutdown.
Blackwell (6-1) has been idle the past two weeks after losing its final non-district game, 76-60, to Highland on Oct. 11.
At the time, the Hornets thought their six-game win-ning streak was the only thing ending. But in addition to a scheduled open date Oct. 18, they discovered two of the other three teams in their district (8 Six-Man) — Lohn and Panther Creek — had cancelled the rest of their season and all three of their district games, due to a lack of players.
That leaves the district with just one game — which will decide district seeding — this Friday when Black-well entertains Robert Lee (4-4) at Blackwell’s field. Since two teams in each district qualify for the playoffs, the Hornets and Steers are playing to decide who will be No. 1 and who is No. 2.
“We look at it as a game for the district championship,” said coach Clint Lowry. “I’m sure they look at it the same way. (Winning the title) was one of our goals. But I’ve never been in a situation like this. We both know we’re going to be playing again in two weeks for sure. It’s great to know that you’re going to be in the playoffs.”
Lowry said his team is ready to return to its win-ning ways. “We’re going to have to start the game out better than we did against Highland,” he said. “We have to stay focused on the game and play the way that we know we can, and not get down on ourselves.
“I think our kids know this is the time of year when it really counts. It’s a district championship game and we’d like to go into the playoffs with a win. It will be a big test for us,” Lowry concluded.
“They know what we do and I hope we know what they do. It’s kind of like a playoff game, because it’s for the district champion-ship and bragging rights.”
