TxDOT engineering staff is assessing the damage to the US 84 bridge at westbound I-20 that was struck by a tractor trailer Thursday evening west of Sweetwater.
Currently, no traffic is allowed over or under the bridge due to the damaged support columns. All traffic is being detoured around the structure at US 84. Traffic being diverted from westbound Interstate 20 should take the first exit on US 84 to Business 84, go under US 84 and return back eastbound on the US 84 frontage road. Traffic should then re-enter US 84 and may then get back on westbound Interstate 20. Signs, cones and message boards are in place to direct drivers. The detour is about 1/2 of a mile long.
TxDOT is working with a contractor to make temporary repairs that will properly support the bridge. It is anticipated that these temporary repairs can be completed within the next 24 hours as long as no other unplanned circumstances occur. Normal traffic flow will then be restored, pending further inspection and assessment by TxDOT staff. Detours will remain in place until the structure is safe for vehicle traffic. TxDOT will issue an emergency contract for permanent repairs to the structure. Total cost of repairs is estimated at about $135,000.
