Sweetwater managed to outscore its state-ranked opponent in the second and fourth quarters of Friday’s District 5-3A opener at Mustang Gym.
But Wylie, ranked No. 22 in Class 3A, was ahead 27-8 after one period and rolled from there to a 76-49 win over the Mustangs.
Sweetwater (9-15) outscored the Bulldogs 11-9 in the second quarter to go into the dressing room trailing by 17 points, 36-19, before Wylie turned on the jets again with a 23-5 run in the third stanza that left Sweetwater trailing 59-24.
The Bulldogs (16-7), whose relentless defensive pressure and size were a problem for the Mustangs all night, ran off 16 straight points and ended the period with a 19-1 run.
But after falling behind by 37 points, Sweetwater outscored Wylie 25-15 the rest of the way to cut the final margin to 27.
“We played hard,” said coach Al Hunt, “but it’s just hard to defend them.
“They’re really good, and we knew they were. When they ran all those post players in and out on us, it created problems. But our intensity was good and we handled their press better than we have been.”
Sweetwater, coming off a 29-point effort against San Angelo Lake View on Tuesday, almost equalled that total in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs rested many of their players with the outcome no longer in doubt.
Taylor Jones finished with 14 points for Sweetwater and Kaleb Hoover 12, while Dylon Adames scored all of his nine points in the final period. Also scoring for the Mustangs were Tino Martinez with six points, Dylan Ben-nett and Anthony Palacios with three points and Patrick Palacios with two.
Eleven different players scored for Wylie, led by Mike Lopez with 16 and Duane Hopper with 14.
Sweetwater is back home Tuesday, as the Mustangs entertain a Big Spring team that’s also 0-1 after losing to Brownwood in its district opener.
