ABILENE — For four in-nings of Friday’s rematch, a Sweetwater team that had lost 16-1 at home to Wylie in its District 5-3A opener stood toe-to-toe with the first-place Bulldogs.
The Mustangs even held a brief 4-1 lead after pushing across three runs in their half of the fourth inning before Wylie tied it by scor-ing three runs as well.
Unfortunately, the scor-ing pretty much ended there for Sweetwater, while Wylie was just getting started. The Bulldogs took their first lead, 8-4, with a four-run fifth and went on to a 10-5 win over the Mustangs.
Wylie, which has clinched a playoff spot with three games left, is now 5-0 in district and 14-3 overall. It’s a much different story for Sweetwater, which has now lost three straight and is 1-4 in district. The Mustangs — who have a non-district game at Ranger Junior Col-lege on Tuesday — likely have to finish the year with a three-game winning streak in district to have a shot at the playoffs.
Sweetwater’s three-run fourth began with a double by Sean Morrow and Greg Aiken’s single. A throwing error on a double steal al-lowed Morrow’s courtesy runner, Bray Amos, to score from third and make it 2-1. Cole Maxwell then doubled to score Aiken and James Clift had an RBI single to score Maxwell. But Wylie tied it in the bottom of the fourth with the help of two Sweetwater errors, and the Bulldogs tacked on four more runs in the fifth and a pair of insurance tallies in the sixth.
Sweetwater, after loading the bases with no outs, scored just one run to cut it to 8-5 in the sixth on Shawn Campbell’s RBI ground ball. Sweetwater took a 1-o lead in the third inning after Clift led off by reaching second on a single and outfield error. After being sacrificed to third, Clift’s courtesy runner Quentin Wetsel scored on an RBI ground ball by Willie Norman.
