Funeral services for C.A. “Cal” Penn, Jr., 76, of Sweetwater will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at McCoy Chapel of Memories. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood, Texas. Reverend Keith Clifton will officiate and interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at the funeral home.Penn died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.He was born March 2, 1937, in Brownwood. He married Peggy Reynolds on May 27, 1957, in Brownwood.Cal moved to Sweetwater from San Marcos in 1973. He served in the United States Navy for years and the reserves for an additional four years. He had a lifelong career in law enforcement. Cal attained a Master Certification in Law Enforcement and a Jailer Certification conferred by the State of Texas. During his 50 years of service to law enforcement, he served on the Brownwood Police Department, the Brown County Sheriff’s Department, the Texas Highway Patrol, the Santa Fe Railroad Police (being commissioned as the first ever Special Texas Ranger), the Nolan County Sheriff’s Department, reserve officer for the Sweetwater Police Department, Hardin Simmons University Police and the Texas State Technical College Police Department. Cal enjoyed horse back riding with his wife and children, and he was a proud 12 year member of the Nolan County Sheriff’s Posse. Cal was a member of the Church of Christ in Brownwood.Survivors include his wife, Peggy Penn of Sweetwater; daughter, Kim Mardis of Sweetwater; sons, Cal Penn, III and wife Jannetta of Odessa, and Jason Penn and partner Steve Maas and daughter Kayla Maas of Newton Falls, Ohio; grandsons, Jacob Mardis of Sweetwater and Michael Cox and Samantha of Odessa; granddaughter, Jessica Allen and husband Cheyenne of Odessa; five great-grandchildren; brother, Johnnie Penn and wife Wilma of Brownwood; sisters, Emma Jean Neal of Kingbury, Texas, Yvonne Taylor of Deming, New Mexico, and “Our Angel on Earth” Tammy Justis of Cedar Creek, Texas.He was preceded in death by his parents, Calbert Alvin Penn, Sr. in 1988 and Gladys Emma Pearce Penn in 1997.Pallbearers will be Debrah Hendricks, Melinda Moncada-Garza, Tom Dorsey, Tommy Wood, Shane Baxter and Peter Sheridan.
