The Sweetwater Fire Department has promoted from within a new assistant fire chief. Lance Campbell was officially named to the position Tuesday by Chief Grant Madden.
Campbell, a 15-year veteran of the department, passed the required promotional exams and met the criteria. Madden believes he will be a good successor to former assistant chief Chris Kiser.
"Lance was hired on right after I was," Madden said. "I've worked with him my entire career. I know he has great leadership skills, we just haven't had a chance to see them yet."
Ever since he was young, Campbell wanted to be a firefighter. He worked as a paramedic for three years before coming to Sweetwater and joining the fire department. He now looks forward to taking the next step in his career.
"I was very excited when I found out I got the job. I've been with the department for over 15 years now and I was looking for some the new challenges that come along with the assistant chief position," Campbell said.
Though his role will change a bit, battling the blazes and answering rescue calls is still a priority for Campbell.
"I'll be in a managerial position, supervising the daily operations of the shift and the great men under my command," Campbell added. "But I will still be out there, involved in the field with the guys. When they make runs, I want to be there with them helping, just like I was always was."
