Casey Joe Campbell, along with attorney John S. Young, pled guilty to online solicitation of a minor, a second degree felony, to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday, Nov. 28, 2011. District Attorney Ann Reed and Assistant District Attorney Barrett Thomas prosecuted the case.
Campbell was indicted in June 2011, on two counts of online solicitation of a minor, second and third degree felonies, enhanced to second and first degree felonies with a prior conviction. Count two was abandoned by the state.
Campbell, 34, was arrested on Sunday, May 1, 2011, for online solicitation of a minor/sexual contact, a second degree felony.
"We received a tip back in November 2010 from a concerned citizen that Campbell was prowling on Facebook, trying to become friendly with teenage girls," said Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley. "So we created a Facebook page for a 15-year-old girl," Kelley added.
Kelley stated that Campbell was "very explicit in what he wanted to do to this underage girl."
Kelley also stated that officers on the page would repeatedly state, "I'm only 15 years old," so that Campbell clearly knew that the girl was underage.
Officers set up a meeting for Campbell and the fictional 15-year-old girl and Campbell showed up to the meeting where he was arrested.
"There are some scary people out there and parents really need to be aware of where their children are going online and who they are talking to online," stated Kelley. "Parents need to talk to their kids and more importantly, parents need to listen to their kids."
In 2002, Campbell was convicted of injury to an elderly person, a third degree felony. He was sentenced to eight years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Sept. 6, 2002.
Campbell pled guilty to the charge and had three other charges dropped from an indictment handed down on Feb. 1, 2002. The charges included two counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of injury to an elderly person. The indictment stated that Campbell sexually penetrated a 65-year-old woman. The incidents occurred at Sweetwater Healthcare Center in January of 2002.
For his plea, Campbell received 15 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. He will also have to pay a $1,000 fine, $743 in court costs and $989 in attorney's fees. He will also have to register as a sex offender upon release from prison. He will receive 212 days credit towards his sentence for time already served in jail.
