Sweetwater will be repre-sented by Alex Castillo at the Region 1-3A boys golf tournament next week.
But Castillo’s teammates won’t be joining him at San Angelo’s Bentwood Country Club. While Castillo shot 73-229 to place fourth among district medalists, the team’s fourth-place finish after a 314-958 wasn’t good enough in Tuesday’s final round — which was held at Abilene’s Maxwell Municipal Golf Course — to advance the Mustangs to the regional tourney.
This will be the first trip to regionals for Castillo, whose score was the lowest among golfers not on one of the top two teams. The regional tournament is April 16-17.
Big Spring held on to first place after shooting 295 for a 917 total. Wylie (299-945) will also go to regionals as the No. 2 team after beating out Snyder (299-946) by a single stroke. Sweetwater’s final round 314 — while the team’s best score of the tournament — ultimately proved to be costly as the Mustangs dropped two pla-ces from second to fourth in the final district standings.
Sweetwater’s 644 total to start the day led Wylie by two shots and was three better than Snyder’s 647.
Castillo and Ryan Mer-cer, who was ninth after a 78-237, won all-district honors while Mason Andrews — who placed 15th after shooting an 82-244 — earned honorable mention. Dylan Torres (81-248) and Guy Bond (109-295) had the Mustang No. 1 team’s other scores.
Sweetwater’s No. 2 team shot 379-1,169 for a ninth-place finish. Michael Haz-ard (89-277), Yates Cypert (93-282), Colin Dunn (94-296), Blake Cumbie (103-314) and Wesley Max-well (112-343) played for the Mustangs’ No. 2 team.
Kevin Ludlum (105-304) and Jeremy Witt (107-332) played only as medalists.
Sweetwater’s girls will go to regionals in San Angelo next week after the team placed second in its district tournament. The Region 1-3A girls event will be played April 18-19 at San Angelo Country Club.
