Century plant blooms in Sweetwater

August 5, 2013

Shown is a century plant, owned by Mamie Thomas of Sweetwater.

A very rare plant is finally flourishing within Sweetwater.
Mamie Thomas of Sweetwater is the owner of a century plant. The plant has been on her property for the past 45 years and only blooms once at the end of its lifespan.
For the past month, the century plant has been in bloom and producing flowers. Thomas said that on average, the plant has grown about three feet per day and has now grown up to over 30 feet tall.
However, now that the blooming has taken place, the century plant is slowly starting to die.
The century plant is like a cactus, so it needs little water for growth. And while the rare plant is here in Sweetwater, it is native to Arizona, as Thomas mentioned that she has seen them before in Phoenix.
