Children entering kindergarten and seventh grade require certain immunizations

August 8, 2011

August is National Immunization Awareness Month, to observe this; we will run an article each week regarding immunizations. This is the second article in a series of five.

Prior to the first day of school each child entering kindergarten are required to have two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine, two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, and two doses of varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian), school nurse or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of varicella disease (chickenpox), or of varicella immunity is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine.
Students entering seventh grade are required to have two doses of varicella vaccine. A written statement from a parent (or legal guardian), school nurse or physician attesting to a child’s positive history of varicella disease (chickenpox), or of varicella immunity is acceptable in lieu of either dose of varicella vaccine, one dose of meningococcal vaccine, and Tentanus, Diphtheria and acellular pertussis-containing vaccine (Tdap): all students entering seventh grade will be required to have one dose of Tdap vaccine. Students in the seventh grade will be required to have a booster dose of Tdap only if it has been five years since their last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine. Students in grades 8-12 are required to have a booster dose of Tdap if it has been 10 years since their previous dose of a tetanus-containing vaccine. Td is acceptable in lieu of Tdap if a contraindication to pertussis exists.
If you are in need of immunizations, the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD) has immunization clinic every Wednesday from 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m. and on the second Wednesday of each month until 6 p.m. The cost is $6 through the Vaccine For Children Program. CHIPS and Medicaid are accepted.
If you have any questions about these vaccine requirements call the SNCHD at 235-5463.
