City approves involvement in steering committees

May 22, 2014

During Tuesday's City Commission meeting, approval was given toward the city's involvement in two steering committees.
A resolution was adopted authorizing the city's participation in the Atmos Cities Steering Committee toward denying the rate increase requested by Atmos Energy. Sweetwater is one of about 160 cities on the committee, which regulates rates for natural gas.
City Manager Eddie Brown stated that the rate increase requests have become ongoing, and because they are not justifiable, the committee wants to deny the requests. If the increase were approved, the average monthly bill would see a $2.02 increase.
In addition, approval was given to approve a resolution authorizing the city to continue participating in the steering committee of cities served by Oncor.
In order to participate in the committee--which the city wants to continue being a part of the committee, a payment of 11 cents per capita is required, which totals about $1,200. Sweetwater is one of 150 cities involved in this particular steering committee, which also works towards obtaining the best rates from the company.
