City election on Saturday

May 9, 2013

Voters can cast their ballot at Sweetwater Middle School from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

This Saturday, registered voters in Sweetwater will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the city election.
All four precincts will vote at Sweetwater Middle School, located at 305 Lamar. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The only contested race on the city ballot is for mayor, which is between incumbent Greg Wortham and Frankie SoRelle.
However, running unopposed for Precinct 1 on the City Commission is incumbent Larry May. Ricky Castro, also an incumbent, is running unopposed for Precinct 3.
And as a result of uncontested candidates, the elections for the Sweetwater ISD Board of Trustees and Nolan County Hospital District--originally scheduled for Saturday--have been cancelled.
The school board election would have been for seats for Districts 1, 2 and 5 on the board. Thus, Genevieve Mayes and Becky Jimenez will continue to serve in their respective districts of 1 and 2, while Jennifer Cherry will now serve in District 5.
Cherry will be replacing Nancy Johnson on the school board, who chose not to run for re-election.
Additionally, the hospital district had four unopposed candidates. Linda Kite (District 2), Steve Holcomb (District 4), Jose Villafranca (District 6) and Kirby Andrews (District 7) will now serve a new, two-year term.
