City projects discussed at commission meeting

January 16, 2014

Various updates on completed and ongoing city projects were given by Eddie Brown during his City Manager's report at Tuesday's City Commission meeting.
On Thursday, January 23, a ribbon cutting will be held for the new SNAP (Senior Nutrition Activities Program) building. It will take place at 1:30 p.m. and hosted by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
The commission was also informed that McDonald Companies is applying with the TDHCA (Texas Department of Housing & Community Affairs) for housing tax credits to construct apartments for senior citizens age 55 and older.
A presentation will be made at the February meeting, in which the commissioners may be asked to pass a resolution in support of the project. The income-restricted housing is expected to be located near the Mustang Heights apartment complex.
Also, the painting of the Loop 549 water storage facility has been completed, sporting white paint and a red Mustang logo. The project's cost came in around $59,000.
City staff will soon begin working on the 2014-2015 budget, in which packets will be given to department heads to determine needs. The Nolan County Central Appraisal District Board of Directors were recently elected for the 2014-2015 term, but city nominee Ben High was not re-elected.
Furthermore, sales tax collections through first quarter of 2014 fiscal year have increased 13%. From October through December 2013, a $70,000 increase was reported.
The status of several ongoing projects was given as well, such as the work by staff and engineers on the permitting process on the city's new landfill.
Additionally, city staff is waiting on surveys and is continuing the annexation process for the man camp to be located near the east interchange at Interstate 20 and the Garden of Memories properties. Work on the removal of substandard structures continues as well, in an effort to tear down eyesores within the community.
