The West Texas Barrel Racing Association will have their 2014 Extravaganza in Sweetwater at the Nolan County Coliseum this year, after having the event in Abilene for over 20 years. "Sweetwater has been so gracious to us," said West Texas Barrel Racing Association President Jennifer Bufkin.
The three-day annual event begins today at noon with the Sally Piper Memorial event. The event is expected to run late into the evening. The extravaganza begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday and awards will be given on Sunday with events beginning at 10 a.m. as well. Bufkin expects that there will be about 1,000 runs throughout the weekend. There will also be a church service at 8 a.m. on Sunday at the Coliseum.
There will be team barrel races and an open 5D barrel race. Races are BBR approved and $1,000 will be added on Saturday and Sunday in the open 5D race.
Buckles will be awarded Friday evening and $500 will be added on Friday evening. Saddles will also be awarded for the Champion 1D team and prizes will be given for five places in each Division. Those wishing to enter can enter one of the youth classes — one for 18 and under and one for eight and under; the open class, open to anyone; and the senior class for racers 50 and over. Entries will be taken at any point during the weekend.
"Come join us for this fun, family oriented event," said Bufkin.
