Rick and Patty Davis of Sweetwater have been volunteering their time and money at the Garden of Memories cemetery in Sweetwater for the past five years. In addition to landscaping, watering and general maintenance of plots, they donated $200 towards the water bill. Rick and Patty don't just tend their own family plots; the plots of family friends are also looked after. The couple knows that not everyone can make it out to the family plots on a regular basis, so they keep an eye on things.
The Davises explained that they want the memorial park to be a peaceful place for those wishing to visit their loved ones' graves. They have installed two stone benches for folks to sit on and rest while they are in the cemetery. Patty tries to walk the cemetery once a week, familiarizing herself with the layout and reminiscing about the folks who are buried there. She has memories about most of the names and where each family is buried.
Other families like Dale and Sheila Burnett have helped with donations. Ed and Nedra Lee, who manage the cemetery, said all donations are appreciated and so are the improvements to the cemetery. Anyone who wishes to help should check with Nedra to suggest their ideas for improvements and see where donations could be best utilized. With today's heat, donations for water are extremely welcome. Nedra Lee can be contacted at 235-9887.
