Sweetwater Intermediate School fifth grade teacher LouAnn Cumbie was honored with this past week's Teacher Tribute award, given by KTXS television station.
Cumbie was nominated by one of her fifth grade math students, Bailey Lanto.
In her letter, Bailey said, "I like my teacher because she is nice and is always willing to help everyone. She inspires me to learn. She is like my second mom. I have known her since I was a second grader. She takes her students first. Do you know how your mom is always loving on you and telling you how good you are but also making you learn? She is the same. I would ask my principal in fourth grade to give me her. I got her. She is always trying to make you laugh."
Cumbie says she was very excited to receive the award. "It is very nice when a student will nominate their teacher for something," she said.
Mrs. Cumbie was also very surprised, as she thought the assembly she was about to attend had to do with encouraging the kids before their tests. "We used to have TAKS pep rallies, and I thought it was something like that about to happen. It was a very nice surprise."
Cumbie received many gifts for the nomination including a dozen roses from her student, gift cards, T-shirts and other prizes. She will also get the chance to drive a car from Arrow Ford for two weeks. Cumbie chose a red Mustang to drive. Mrs. Cumbie and Bailey will also get a chance to speak on KEAN Radio.
Mrs. Cumbie has been in education for 27 years, teaching her first years at Southeast Elementary School before moving to San Angelo for one year. She came back to teach fourth grade at SIS and began teaching fifth grade and has continued to do so for the past 20 years.
Cumbie is a 1985 graduate of Sweetwater High School and a graduate of Angelo State University. She and her husband, Dennis, have two children — Blake, who is a freshman at Sweetwater High School and Sarah who is a student at Texas Tech University, who will apply for medical school this summer.
