Daniel Lee (Dan) Giesler

February 21, 2014

Daniel Lee (Dan) Giesler, 85, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, in Boerne, of heart failure.
He was a native of Sweetwater, and was born Jan. 7, 1929, to Robert Lee (Lee) Giesler and Jewel McLaughlin. Dan graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1948.
Dan married Nita Faye Clark in the First United Methodist Church of Colorado City on June 28, 1948. Married for 64 years, they were best friends with a bond that was unassailable and forged from love and laughter.
To quote the oldest of his boyhood friends, Dan “was a man’s man. He was the kind of man you wanted to be. He was the kind of man you wanted your son to be.” He was immediately likeable, having a quick sense of humor and ready laughter. Dan was strong and kind, with a code of ethics and honor that was respected and apparent to all. He maintained his passion for the water throughout his life; whether it was skiing or fishing or exploring the bank or just observing, he never missed the chance to be on or close to a lake. He was a true Texan in all things, and had a genuine love and admiration for the spring wildflowers, Texas ‘critters’, the varying landscapes and scenery and the way of life portrayed in his much-read and watched Western books and movies. One of Dan and Nita’s favorite leisure pastimes was “driving around” the back roads of Texas.
Dan was a life-long trucker, learning the trade early with his family cattle trucking business where he developed an unparalleled work ethic. He is remembered by his friends as often “driving a load of cows to Fort Worth after football practice and not missing school the next morning…up all night, but still at practice the next day.” His career took him to almost every State in the Union, and he transported cargo that was sometimes mundane and sometimes unusual, but always interesting to him. Dan and Nita operated a successful trucking business as partners for over 20 years, retiring to Oak Creek Lake in 1997.
Dan is preceded in death by wife, Nita Faye Clark Giesler; parents, Robert Lee and Jewel McLaughlin Giesler; grandparents George Joseph and Nancy E. Robertson Giesler and William and Maggie Cain McLaughlin; brothers, Harold Lloyd Giesler of Odessa and Douglas Austin Giesler of Sweetwater; sisters, Vada Lee Giesler Ashley and Lily May Giesler Rhoton, both of Sweetwater.
Dan is survived by daughters, Kathryn (Kaci) Giesler Poindexter of Spring Branch and Danna (DJ) Giesler Roberts of Canyon Lake; son, Jimmy Lee Giesler of Anson; grandchildren, Daniel Roberts of Mico, Traci Roberts Zepeda of Dallas, Nichole Giesler Buckley, Sharae Giesler Glasgow, Diedra Giesler Wargo, all of Abilene; 18 great- grandchildren; and seven nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held in Sweetwater, at a later date, to be announced. The family wishes to thank Vaughan’s Funeral Home of Boerne for their support during this time of grief.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local animal shelter or to Hill Country Animal League, 924 N. Main St., Boerne, TX 78006 (http://hcaltx.com/).
Husband, Father, Grandfather: Dan leaves a legacy of strength of character, joy of life and love. Heaven rejoices at his presence.
